Nepal: chaos, tragedy, and perseverance

Although there had long been animosity toward Nepal's political elite, the government's social media ban served as the final straw. Nonviolent protests against political corruption and mismanagement started on September 8. They swiftly turned into violent altercations that claimed many lives and left the nation at a crucial political juncture. Sanjeev Satgainya documents the street-level explosion of popular unrest.



When violence broke out between youth protestors and security forces in Nepal on the afternoon of September 8, 23-year-old Riddhima Sanba and her companions fled to a cafe about 200 meters from the Parliament building in Kathmandu. The police opened fire, and the cafe was flooded with tear gas.
