Trump chastises Netanyahu for the strikes in Qatar in an unusual move.
Benjamin Netanyahu received a rare smack on the wrist from President Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in response to Israel's airstrike against Hamas in Qatar. He maintained that he had nothing to do with the attack by one close friend of the United States against another.
During a rare visit to a restaurant in Washington, Mr. Trump told reporters, "I'm not thrilled about the whole situation." "We are not happy with how things transpired today, but we do want the hostages returned."
In addition to its involvement in the Gaza negotiations, Qatar is home to a sizable US airbase and hosted Mr. Trump during a Middle East swing earlier this year, so the Israeli attack on Doha couldn't be more delicate.
Significant ethical concerns were raised when the fossil fuel-rich emirate recently donated a high-end Boeing 747-8 airplane to the US for Mr. Trump to use as his presidential aircraft.
In an article on his Truth Social network, Mr. Trump stated, "Prime Minister Netanyahu made this decision, not me."
He stated that destroying Hamas was still a "worthy goal," but added that he felt terrible about the attack's location. "I view Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the U.S."
Mr. Trump concentrated on the potential harm to his attempts to put an end to the war in Gaza in a statement that mostly repeated one made earlier by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Israel and America's objectives are not furthered by unilaterally striking within Qatar, a sovereign nation and close partner of the United States that is courageously and diligently taking risks with us to broker peace, Mr. Trump stated.
The U.S. president was careful to emphasize that the Israeli attack took Washington off guard.
According to him, the US military "notified the White House that Israel was attacking Hamas which, which, very unfortunately, was located in a section of Doha."
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff was instructed by me right away to alert the Qataris of the coming attack. Unfortunately, he did so too late to prevent it.
