A bar fire in Bangkok claimed at least 27 lives and badly injured eight.
In Bangkok's well-known Chatuchak neighborhood, a pub caught fire, leaving eight badly injured and at least 27 dead.
When firefighters arrived on the scene just after midnight on Monday, they saw customers escaping through the venue's front door, which was engulfed in flames.
Witnesses claim that the fire quickly spread after starting close to the bar's stage. People can be seen fleeing the bar, some of them screaming and toppling over, as flames shoot out of it in video that was uploaded on X.
Such situations have happened in Thailand before. Official pledges to strengthen electrical and fire safety regulations in the wake of past mishaps are still frequently not upheld.
Around 23:30 local time, a passing car apparently noticed the facility on fire, prompting firefighters to arrive at the scene just after midnight. He told the Daily News, a local news station, that in order to help two people escape, he jumped out of his car and smashed windows.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the official cause of the fire is still being looked into.
Additionally, he told reporters that he had spoken with a musician who was playing at the time of the fire and who described what transpired.
"He claimed that after there was a fire at the cut-out switch, everything happened very fast. Everyone attempted to escape the smoke and flames while there was blasting, he said.We discovered the majority of the bodies in the restroom at the back of the building since many of them were unable to escape and sought refuge there from the smoke and flames."
