Iran warns that if the United States does not honor the agreement within weeks, things would get worse.
The official warned that Tehran would launch a "timely and precise" military strike to end the U.S. naval embargo on the Islamic Republic if the U.S. fails to fulfill that deadline and diplomacy failed.

A top Iranian official warned Reuters on Monday (August 17, 2026) that if the United States does not completely implement a temporary peace pact within a few weeks, Iran will intensify tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and beyond and launch an attack.
The official further stated that Tehran would launch a "timely and precise" military strike to end the U.S. naval blockade of the Islamic Republic if the United States fails to fulfill that deadline and diplomacy is unsuccessful.
In recent weeks, diplomatic attempts to resume discussions between Washington and Tehran under a June accord have faltered.
The U.S. Treasury Secretary has warned of unprecedented economic isolation for Iran, while Iran's Foreign Minister has stated that the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen unless the United States first returns to the agreement.
"The United States must implement all of the agreement's obligations within the limited time frame of a few weeks established by Iran. The official told Reuters that this is a prerequisite for future talks with the United States.
The person noted that Washington and regional states would be informed by mediators about Tehran's deadline.
The official stated, "Iranian entities must be ready to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and wider region, as Iran will be ready to make decisions and take action on difficult decisions."
According to the Iranian source, Tehran is changing its strategy from defense to offense since it no longer believes that engagement with Washington is worthwhile.
The official stated, "It is a proven fact that the U.S. is not serious about a ceasefire and will not commit to any, so putting pressure on the enemy or relying on mediators in the hope of reaching a permanent ceasefire is not realistic."
