Al Jazeera journalists report that Israeli forces used missiles to hit the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza, demolishing the emergency unit and shutting down the only operational hospital in northern Gaza.
Following a warning from the Israeli military prior to the attack, some patients, including those in severe condition, were compelled to leave the hospital, while others were evacuated by health officials.
The Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza stated in a statement on Sunday that the airstrike occurred "minutes after the army's warning to evacuate this building of patients, the injured, and their companions."
It also stated, "The surgery building and the oxygen generation station for the intensive care units were destroyed as a result of the bombing."
Since the assault on Gaza began on October 7, 2023, Israeli airstrikes have regularly targeted hospitals in Gaza, which are protected by international humanitarian law.
Tareq Abu Azzoum of Al Jazeera, reporting from Deir el-Balah in northern Gaza, stated that critically ill patients, including those in the surgical and emergency units, are being left without oxygen or shelter.
At least three people, including a 12-year-old kid with a head injury, were reported dead after the forced evacuation, according to Razan al-Nahhas, an emergency physician currently serving in central Gaza who was formerly employed at al-Ahli Hospital.
According to the Israeli military, the hospital was targeted because the "terrorist organization Hamas" was using it as a "command and control" center.
Gaza's Government Media Office said in a statement that Israel "deliberately destroyed and rendered out of service 34 hospitals as part of a systematic plan to dismantle what remains of the healthcare sector in the Gaza Strip," denouncing the attack as a "heinous and filthy crime."
Hundreds of people were killed in an attack on the hospital in October 2023.
