Israel-Iran War LIVE: European countries in talks with Tehran for Hormuz transit, Iran state TV says

"Following the passage of ships from East Asian countries, notably China, Japan and Pakistan, we received information today indicating that Europeans have also begun negotiations with the Revolutionary Guards navy" to obtain permission to pass, state television reported.

The United States declared on Friday, May 15, 2026, that Israel and Lebanon had reached an agreement to extend a ceasefire and begin wider discussions on a political settlement, despite Israel carrying out further strikes that it maintains are not covered by the truce.

The Lebanese state news agency reported early on Saturday, May 16, 2026, that an Israeli strike on a civil defense center in southern Lebanon resulted in at least six deaths, including three paramedics, and 22 injuries.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Friday, May 15, 2026, that he had "received messages" from the United States stating that it is willing to continue talks and that he was open to any support, including from China, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Xi Jinping had offered China's assistance to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Mr. Araghchi told reporters in New Delhi, "We received messages again from the Americans saying that they are willing to continue the talks and continue the interaction." According to Mr. Trump, the Chinese leader also promised not to provide military hardware to support Iran in its conflict with Israel and the United States.
