Zelenskyy responds to top Russian officials meeting with the United States in Saudi Arabia on February 18.

Russia-US talks: The Kremlin said Monday that senior Russian and US officials will meet for high-stakes discussions on repairing bilateral relations to negotiate a peaceful end to the conflict in Ukraine and getting ready for a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Putin's foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov will visit Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, later today for the discussions set for Tuesday (February 18), Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the US team, with Trump's ambassador Steve Witkoff and national security advisor Mike Waltz joining him. Witkoff confirmed this in an interview with Fox News on Sunday.

Zelenskyy's comments regarding US-Russia negotiations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters during a conference call from the United Arab Emirates on Monday that his nation will participate in the negotiations this week, but that they would "yield no results" because no Ukrainian officials would be present.

The discussions come after Trump and Putin spoke over the phone last week, during which Trump stated that they "agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately." The call ended the isolation of Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, upending years of US policy. Trump called Zelenskyy after the call with Putin to let him know what they had discussed.

Trump's comments regarding Zelenkyy's involvement

Zelenskyy "will be involved," Trump assured reporters Sunday, without providing further details. Zelenskyy stated that he would visit Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and Turkey on Monday, but that his visit to the Arab country had nothing to do with the scheduled US-Russian discussions there on Tuesday. Earlier on Sunday, top Zelenskyy adviser Andriy Yermak stated that direct meetings between Russian and Ukrainian officials were not possible in the near future. Yermak stated in a Telegram post that the Ukrainians have no intention of doing so "until we develop a plan" to put an end to the conflict and establish a "just peace."
